Lone Star College-Kingwood and PROTECT Institute of Self-Defense will offer a series of free Model Mugging courses for students, faculty/staff and the community on the college campus beginning in September.

Stories of children not reaching their potential in public schools are familiar to Kingwood resident Andrea Badot, a professional photographer and mother of two who led the revival of an Humble Independent School District parent advocacy group last year. As the school year begins, and Badot enters the second year of leading Humble ISD Parents for Gifted and Talented, there’s an irony. Her daughter no longer attends an Humble ISD elementary, but attends classes in a Montessori program where it is hoped she’ll be challenged and able to learn at her own pace.

The Mercer Society and Keep Houston Beautiful present "Introduction to Composting : A Composting Workshop," on Tuesday, Sept. 7. John Ferguson of Nature's Way Resources will be the guest speaker. The workshop also includes a hands-on demonstration by Jeff Heilers, assistant director and green house manager at Mercer Arboretum.

The Texas Fried Frito Pie is the winner of the biggest food prize for this year’s state fair. The battered and fried blend of chili, cheese and Fritos won the Best Taste award Monday at the sixth annual Big Tex Choice Awards. Prize winners usually attract long lines from fairgoers.

Tropical Storm Hermine has proved a rainmaker for south Texas but now appears to be less of a flooding threat to Harris County today. After yesterday's widespread rains, Harris County and counties immediately adjacent have been mostly dry overnight, with the heaviest rains to the southwest of Houston. The best chance of rain today and tonight will be west of Interstate 45, forecasters with the Houston/Galveston office of the National Weather Service said.
